Educational Programs

K-12th Grade

At the David Humphreys House or at your school!

The "A Day in 1762" program began when the David Humphreys House first opened to the public on November 6, 1980. The program was created by the Society's first Executive Director, the late Dorothy Larson. The year 1762 was chosen because David Humphreys was the same age as a contemporary fifth-grader back then.

After decades of offering this signature program, we have added additional living history experiences suitable for varying age groups.

A Day in 1762

Historical educators will transport you back in time to experience life in the 18th century when David Humphreys himself was 10 years old. This 4 hour experience includes an outdoor walking tour of the Elm Street historic district, an inside tour of the David Humphreys House and the opportunity for each student to participate in one of three hands-on workshops: spinning, weaving or cooking. Lunch is provided.

This class takes place onsite at the David Humphreys House and is geared toward 4th and 5th grade classes.

Colonial Kids - A Day in 1758

Historical reenactors welcome you to 1758 when David Humphreys was 6 years old. Experience life as a child in the 18th century with many things to touch, explore and play with! This is a 2.5 hour experience and includes an inside tour of the David Humphreys House, a craft project and a snack.

This class takes place at the David Humphreys House and is geared toward 1st and 2nd grade classes.

Colonial Kids: A Visit From the 18th Century

Costumed reenactors will visit your classroom and transport students back to the 18th century. Learn about what a typical day would be like as a child during this time period including what they would wear, what their school day would be like, what kind of chores they would be responsible for and what they would play with. This program runs 1.5 hours and includes a classroom craft project.

This program takes place in your classroom and is geared towards 1st - 3rd grade classes.

Culinary Time Travel: A Colonial Hearthside Experience

This open hearth cooking program offers an immersive, hands-on experience that delves into the methods of food preparation and storage during the colonial period. Under the guidance of a knowledgeable docent with hearth cooking and education experience, students will step back in time and prepare their own meal using traditional methods.

This program runs 4 hours and takes place on site at the David Humphreys House. It is for high school students participating in a culinary program.
